Headphone Heroes

This project was done for Hip-Hop artist Alex Lee. Conceptually, she wanted to do something comic book like. Additionally, she indicated that she wanted to incorporate headphones like a hero would don a cape. To stay within the theme, I used an all-caps font, but also borrowed a Frank Miller Sin City approach by use of high contrast imagery mixed with red and black colors.

To add an extra POP to the project, it was printed with a glossy finish.

And as a extra throw in, I gave her a hand drawn flier to help promote her live show.

Infinite Sadness (10th hour)

Here’s hour 10 of progress. For the time allotted, I think it came out okay. However, after soliciting feedback from my roommate, I’m going to use my remaining 5 hours to make modifications including releasing some of the hair and hand illustrating the type. Type isn’t easy, so I’m guessing that I’ll need all 5 hours to complete it.

Infinite Sadness (9h)

9 hours into the project. The linework can be cleaned up some more, but I may be able to let it stand, as the small imperfections will get lost when I shrink it for print. I made color adjustments, but I’m not sure how I’m feeling about the earth tone and there might not be enough contrast between the blues. All that’s left now is laying down text, which will take some time. Any color changes or font suggestions?

7 hours 45 minutes later. I really have no business coloring it yet, but I wanted to take an extra looksy to see where I’m heading with this. Any thoughts on color?

I’m currently at 4 hours 15 minutes for time spent on this project. Here’s a preview:

Now that it’s scanned, I’ll clean it up in PS, then line it up in Illustrator. Hopefully both take less than 3 hours total.
