Headphone Heroes

This project was done for Hip-Hop artist Alex Lee. She wanted to use the idea of being a comic book type superhero and utilizing headphones like a hero dons a cape. To satisfy the comic book requirement, I chose an all-caps font, but also used a Frank Miller Sin City approach by use of high contrast imagery mixed with red and black colors.

Additionally, I provided her with an illustrated flier to help promote her live show.

Experimental Type

The goal of this project was to create a concept map poster based on Experimental Type. As a daily rider of BART, I mapped out the relationships of ideas using their transit maps as my inspiration. I used the DIN font for the information to replicate its usage in traffic information in Germany.

This first image is the concept map that helped me establish the relationships of ideas.

This map was the first map constructed in this project.

Lastly, here is the final.

Future Junglizm

This album art and layout was done for drum & bass album. For the cover, I illustrated a futuristic looking lion hoping to show three things: 1) the DJ’s moniker (Rebel Lion), 2) the aggressive sound of the mix, and 3) play to the album’s title Future Junglizm.

Here is the original idea followed by the illustrated version.

Baduizm

This personal project was an attempt at replicating the look and feel of the Fillmore venue rock posters from the 60’s–70’s era. Within Erykah Badu’s head-wrap are song titles from her debut album Baduizm.

Here’s the original lineart for this project.

And the final.

Poetry Matchbook

This book containing poems and song lyrics concentrated around a singular theme: fire. Using the theme as inspiration, I chose to present the book as a matchbook. Scaled five times larger than the size of a standard matchbook, it also includes a staple and sandpaper striker. Materials used included candle wax for the matchtips and a wire hanger for the staple. This book also includes a CD insert.

Some of the ideas from my sketchbook.

SF MOMA Redesign and Mailer

This project involved updating the SFMOMA logo and creation of an 18”x24” fold out mailer for an upcoming show. For the logo, I did not stray too far from their current logo and kept the linear look and feel and used a sans serif font.

Earlier ideas played to the “O” and associating it back to the window located in front of the museum.

For the poster/mailer, since the logo was a prominent characteristic on the informational side, I attempted to utilize that look and feel throughout, with informational importance dictated by size.

Graffitiami

This was an exploration in type combining both kirigami and graffiti. Done as a birthday card, it first required creating his name in graffiti and then manipulating it to work as 3D model with considerations to how the background cardstock would work with the image.

This last image is the lineart used in the creation of this project. Created in Illustrator.
